HK Book Fair

Went to the HK Book Fair with Sharon tonight. Bought over HKD 400 worth of books despite having planned to buy none, but that was expected. Also expectedly, Sharon bought the latest instalment of Harry Potter, which my sister finished in three days despite having promised to take it slow…

Correction

Yesterday I accused Qantas for being a tight-arse… well after some research using Google, I found that by claiming CX points on QF, CX actually has to pay QF for the points, so in this case it’s very probable that Cathay Pacific is the one being tight. Sorry Qantas!

LinuxWorld SF

Just back in Hong Kong for a few days and have to think about the next trip already… damn. San Francisco next month, for the LinuxWorld trade show. Apparently my employer has a booth there (SW Linux, #2034). Debian is about 100 feet away at booth #2037 (floor plan here); perhaps I’ll see some of you again there.

Meme? What meme?

I think this is the first Planet Debian meme I’ve been in…

Which Fantasy/SciFi Character Are You?

Qantas being stingy?

Why is it that Qantas never automatically credit my Cathay Pacific flights to Australia into my Qantas Frequent Flyer account? Case in point: my CX flights to Melbourne way back in Easter this year are nowhere to be seen, yet the CX ones I took to Tokyo didn’t pose a problem. Even my Finnair flights to Helsinki last week already show up in the online account summary.

Way to go, Qantas…

Helsinki: some observations

  • Europe is expensive
  • Helsinki is hot
  • Jacques Chirac did have a point
  • Helsinki is hot
  • Now that I’ve been to Europe, I finally found out what all those comments about Melbourne being really similar to a European city is all about… the trams, the alleys, the city layout, the architecture, even the icy-cold’n tasty tap water!
  • Did I mention Helsinki is hot? If there’s air-conditioning around then it’s fine, but there are none… not in the hotel, not in lecture theatres, not on buses nor trams, not in restaurants; in fact it is often cooler outdoors. WTF?

Arrived in HEL

Robert and I have managed to have made our way to the hotel next to the HUT campus in Otaniemi. Very nice environment here, with the lake (or is it the sea?) next door.

But what’s wrong with the weather? It’s like 28°C, humid, and the hotel room has no air conditioning, only a fan on the desk… Isn’t Europe meant to be cooler than this even in summer?

We’ll be heading out to the city to find something to eat. Damn it’s hot here!

Not Dead Yet

I said I would a least write something once per day. Seems like I haven’t kept up with my promise… anyway, here’s briefly what I have been doing in the past week or so:

  • Watched Man of La Tiger with Sharon and friends. Damn funny to say the least. I found a very brief English description of the drama, reproduced here:
Astonishing comedian Jim Chim, together with renowned playwright Paul Poon, makes use of incredible imagination to create a funny, weird, crazy, creepy stand-up-and-up comedy. To speak of, laugh at, blame on, yell at, and cry for the strangest behaviour of Man.
  • Got myself a Panasonic NV-GS150 :D
  • Went off to Macau with Sharon for some much-needed rest over the July 1st long weekend.

I shall talk more about these in a few moments.

Back in HK

  • CZ310 was delayed for more than 30 minutes. :(
  • The plane took the northern approach while landing… I think this is the first time I’ve seen Tsing Ma Bridge and Hong Kong Disneyland from the air… not particularly exciting, but interesting nonetheless.
  • The airport more crowded than usual. Waited more than 20 minutes for my luggage, way too long by HKIA standards.
  • But above all… home sweet home.

Finally

Finally the end of my stay in Beijing for a while… looking forward to be in Hong Kong again.
