Stop kowtowing to the “creative industry”

I only realized that today, April 30, is the deadline for making submissions to the Copyright Protection in the Digital Environment paper, as I went to bed last night. Now of course everyone knows most of the public consultations conducted by the Hong Kong Government are only done to allow them to claim that they have listened to the public, but without listening to what the public actually has to say.

Nevertheless, I felt that doing something is better than being a sitting duck for the money-grabbing “creative industry” cartels that the Government so desperately wants to please.

So here it is: my submission to the paper (PDF). I should’ve allowed more time for this; right now it still feels very rough.

However, while it seems more and more people are concerned this time around, knowing the HK Government I’m not getting my hopes up high.

PS. I’ve submitted via email a few hours ago but I have yet to receive an acknowledgement from them…

I’ll Remember This, Who’ll Pay?

Just a few days ago I read some article (sorry I forgot from where, Next Magazine perhaps) claiming that, despite the I’m-Not-Actually-The-Boss picture the slogan “I’ll Get The Job Done” paints, Sir Bowtie’s team is actually ecstatic because of all the noise it generated. They thought people would keep talking about it for weeks at least, and that’s good.

Then came Czar Li and Burnt Rice, who jointly usurped the number one position in the town’s most talked about quote chart, with “I’ll Remember This. You’ll Pay!” and “Watch Your Mouth, Mister!”

Now that’s what they mean by “administrative-led governance.”

Who would’ve thought? At just the right time, too. I wonder who’ll pay.

Huge jackpot tonight.

Deficit about the English Language

Is there any wonder why our secondary school system is running such a huge deficit that so many of them are facing closure? Even the toilets are so advanced, they can browse websites and give out answers to examinations. Such extravagance! The deficit must be rectified, as they say.

Update 07 May In response, someone rised a counter-petition.

Kawaii No More

Seems that RoadShow has replaced FirsTVision on NWFB buses. Not that I want those idiot boxes on buses, but when I’m forced to watch them at least give me something that is not irritating. If replacing it with RoadShow means no more of that faux-cute hostess Kawaii then I’m all for it.

When Magic Kingdom Becomes Messy Kingdom

I wasn’t going to write about the chaos at Hong Kong Disneyland over the past few days, since there’s already so much excellent commentary about it.

But as I watched HK Disneyland director Bill Ernest cry…

… the first word that popped up in my mind was: insincere. Continue reading ‘When Magic Kingdom Becomes Messy Kingdom’

Stop on Red? Let’s try Stop on Yellow…

Has anyone seen the latest government APIs on new red-light rules? Whoever did those APIs must have never driven a car.

“Stop on yellow light.” That’s just braindead. Devoid of common sense. Given that drivers here tailgate at every opportunity, if they do what the government wants them to do…

My Chinese is gooder than you

This must be some kind of New Year’s joke.

I received my Common Recruitment Exam results last Saturday. I passed all three papers, including Chinese. Which is great, but I haven’t studied any Chinese since Primary 4.

What does this say about the declining language proficiency level in Hong Kong?

Yes, that means I miss out on the march. Again.

Speaking of the march, Apple Daily is once again trying to get as many people to go on the streets as possible during the past week, culminating with today’s headline, “For Our Next Generation’s Tomorrow, Go On Street Today”, together with a “I Want To See Universal Suffrage” banner.

Donald Tsang is a marvellous salesman

Really he is. By using prime time TV to address everybody, even people who were disinterested in political reform are now very clear of the issues involved in the debate.

Very effectively, he reminded everybody to go march on Sunday.
