Sweden: forward thinking and clear thinking are not mutually exclusive

Second Life may be the most hyped up virtual world around, but this is just ridiculous [The Age]:

Sweden plans embassy in Second Life Sweden is to become the first country to establish diplomatic representation in the virtual reality world of Second Life, officials said. “We are planning to establish a Swedish embassy in Second Life primarily as an information portal for Sweden,” Swedish Institute (SI) director Olle Waestberg has told AFP.

If I am a Swede I’m not sure if I want my country to be associated with what appears to be the online haven for money laundering and pyramid schemes.

Pay First, or Else

I noticed a strange new development in Beijing since I last visited here (and practically since the last time I wrote something here); almost all restaurants now require payment immediately after ordering. Even ones that didn’t use to do this, the ones that you wouldn’t expect to require this now do.

Does anybody else see this? Why? It’s not as if people are running off or something…

I’m gonna die from heat exhaustion

I was trying to get my caffeine fix this afternoon at a Starbucks (well where else can you get half decent coffee in Nanjing…)

Me: I’d like a tall latte, please.
Starbucks: Hot or iced?
Me: Hot.
Starbucks: Wouldn’t it be too hot in this kind of weather?
Me: No, I prefer my coffee hot, thanks.
Starbucks: You sure you don’t want to try our iced coffee?
Me: No.
Starbucks: Please be careful, you might get heat exhaustion.
Me: JUST GIVE ME A HOT LATTE!
Starbucks: Do you want syrup with that?
Me: (WTF? Only iced coffee come with syrup) NO!

Deficit about the English Language

Is there any wonder why our secondary school system is running such a huge deficit that so many of them are facing closure? Even the toilets are so advanced, they can browse websites and give out answers to examinations. Such extravagance! The deficit must be rectified, as they say.

Update 07 May In response, someone rised a counter-petition.

Oh bloody hell you Brits…

I can’t believe “bloody hell” is still considered an expletive in this day and age. It hasn’t been for at least a decade, as evidenced by its widespread use in advertising:

People are not offended anyway.

When Magic Kingdom Becomes Messy Kingdom

I wasn’t going to write about the chaos at Hong Kong Disneyland over the past few days, since there’s already so much excellent commentary about it.

But as I watched HK Disneyland director Bill Ernest cry…

… the first word that popped up in my mind was: insincere. Continue reading ‘When Magic Kingdom Becomes Messy Kingdom’

Stop on Red? Let’s try Stop on Yellow…

Has anyone seen the latest government APIs on new red-light rules? Whoever did those APIs must have never driven a car.

“Stop on yellow light.” That’s just braindead. Devoid of common sense. Given that drivers here tailgate at every opportunity, if they do what the government wants them to do…

It’s Not Enough

Well, it only took our beloved Chief Executive three days to make 3 concessions on the proposed Article 23 bill. Actually there are only 2 concessions—while the part about proscribing local groups that are linked to banned mainland groups is deleted from the draft bill, the Secretary of Security still reserves the right to decide which groups are participating in separatist activities.

But the government still wants to pass the bill on July 9.

This shows how out of touch the government is with the people of Hong Kong. They went to the streets on July 1 not only because of what is in the draft, but also because of how the bill is rammed through LegCo. The government addressed a small part of what is wrong with the draft (merely four days before the final debate in LegCo), but they have not addressed what is wrong with the process—arguably more important of the two.

Don’t think you can cheat us all, Mr. Tung.
