Re: Professional Membership Registration

Dear Mr. So

Thank you for your registration for the professional membership. As a professional member of the ACM Hong Kong Chapter, you have the right to vote in the Chapter’s Annual General Meeting. Your membership is valid from May 12, 2004 to May 11, 2005.

(ACM is the Association for Computing Machinery)

Finally. Now I’m qualified to elect who will get the Information Technology Functional Constituency seat in this year’s Hong Kong Legislative Council Election. Though still more than three months away, China is already doing whatever they can behind the scenes, including:

  • blackmailing pro-democratic radio hosts, silencing them;
  • pressuring employees in Chinese-related companies to vote for pro-Beijing candidates;
  • to ensure that they do vote for them, asking them to take pictures of their ballot paper using their camera phones — even when letting anybody else to see their ballots is illegal in Hong Kong;
  • and so on and so on.

To paraphrase a famous curse, September’s LegCo elections will certainly be an interesting time.
