Sumimasen

Last night Anthony and I went to a Japanese shabu-shabu place near Ring Road 3 East for dinner. When we arrived, the place was nearly empty, and that casted doubts on their food for Anthony. But my instincts told me that Beijingers won’t like authentic shabu-shabu, so this place must be authentic. And I was right; the food was great. The waitress confirmed my theory and said most of their customers were Japanese. Although most of the staff were Chinese, they spoke Japanese all the time, even amongst themselves, which added to the place’s charm.

What amused me most was, even after finding out that we were from Hong Kong, the waitress still kept saying すみません (sumimasen, or excuse me in Japanese) to us.
