Sad Day

’Tis a sad day indeed.

  • Hong Kong Government fell for Microsoft’s shared source program. This just gives me one more reason to hate ITSD, which I will elaborate more on in the future.
  • Li Ka-Shing, not content with merely controlling things we use and consume, now wants to control what we produce too.
  • John Lever still failed to catch the croc.

Sigh.

In Nanjing Now

It isn’t so cold here; only 10′C. In fact I like this weather. Much better than the (still!) sweltering Hong Kong.

Traffic Jam

This is just so cute. One more reason why I miss Melbourne.

Button Labels

Mislabeled button labels in dialog boxes are always bad. But this suggestion is not very good either. The Gnome Human Interface Guidelines have a much better suggestion:

[present] a button labelled with a verb or verb phrase describing the action to be confirmed, or labelled OK if such a phrase would be longer than three words…

Don’t use MySQL

My friends and colleagues often ask me why I absolutely hate using MySQL. This site nicely sums it up.

Leaving for Nanjing

I will be leaving Hong Kong tomorrow night to Nanjing, and will not be back for about a month.

I knew I was going to Nanjing this week, but it was only know that I have the exact flight details confirmed. This is business as usual in the company I work for; our boss likes to leave everything till the last minute. Inconvenient, but such is life.

Speedy Revenue

Next time when you receive a speed ticket and want to curse the police, be glad that you are not in the state of Victoria, Australia, where:

Have I mentioned that the speed cameras are everywhere around Melbourne?

If you are already in Melbourne, well then, too bad.

Come to think of it, having one camera per kilometre along Route 3 should do wonders to the Hong Kong budget deficit.

Seizing Crocs

A 2.5-metre saltwater crocodile living in a backyard swimming pool in the suburbs of Sydney was seized by wildlife officers yesterday amid fears it could escape into nearby Botany Bay.

Yup. Seized, just like that. No dramas there.

Meanwhile, John Lever, possibly the most famous Aussie in Hong Kong at the moment, has finally arrived to help out Hong Kong’s Agricultural and Fisheries Department, who were played like a fool by a 1.5-metre long crocodile enjoying his stay in Yuen Long. After he took a site visit, he proclaimed that the method used by the authorities were correct; they were only incredibly out of luck.

I think it’s more due to that fact that it is the Hong Kong Government’s destiny to turn every little thing into a drama.

District Council Election 23 NOV

Your vote can make Hong Kong a better place.

If only I could vote. The place I live falls inside the Lei King Wan constituency of the Eastern district, and on Saturday I received a letter from the government’s Registration and Electoral Office, helpfully informing me that my constituency is Uncontested, Voting Not Required.

That uncontested candidate is Alexander Fu, 54, member of the Hong Kong Progressive Alliance, one of the pro-government groups. Goddamit, to say the least.

New World First Bus vs. the MTR

These days I prefer taking the bus and tram over the MTR while travelling to work in Hong Kong. Apart from a more comfortable ride than packing into a sardine can, I mean an MTR train, it actually turns out being cheaper for me.

But today while stuck in a traffic jam on the Island Eastern Corridor, I was tortured by a skipping music video featuring Yumiko. Ugh. Worse, the volume was way too high, and I couldn’t escape from it.

If FirsTVision continues to show crap like this, I might just go back to the MTR.
